Unlocking New Music
Presentation at the Ohio Music Teachers Association fall conference. Click here for more information and to register for the conference!
“Unlocking New Music” will seek to take the fear out of new music, teaching interpretative strategies and practical tips for more expedient learning. Exploring works by Widmann, Martino, and Crawford, participants will learn to overcome notational challenges and find the essence of the music within, freeing the concept of dissonance from its often-negative connotations and realizing instead its endlessly colorful, expressive potential. The session will conclude with a discussion about new-to-us music, the challenges of an imperfect editorial and recorded legacy, and the value of interpreting and advocating for this music beyond limitations.
